Bill Tainter Scholarship

For Students with Disabilities Transitioning from High School, or Veterans with disabilities who want to pursue a higher education. Sponsored by the Los Angeles County Commission on Disabilities.

Who is eligible?

• Applicants residing in the County of Los Angeles.
• Students
  • Students with a disability graduating/transitioning from high school to a community college, vocational/trade school, or four-year college
  • Students with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better with a diagnosed learning or physical disability
• Veterans*
  • Veterans pursuing a higher education, regardless of age
  • Veterans with a disability or disabilities who have been discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States under honorable conditions
  • Veterans who possess a valid DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD214), or any other official document(s) issued by the branch of service

1800Wheelchair.com Fourth Scholarship award

1800Wheelchair.com is proud to announce our fourth scholarship award. Established in 2006, the scholarship fund will award one $500 scholarship to a high school or undergraduate student on January 30, 2009. The scholarship is open to students of any major or concentration. The winner's name, essay and photo will be posted on 1800wheelchair.com. Although not a requirement, preference will be given to students with mobility disabilities.

To qualify for entry, participants must meet the following criteria:

• Enrolled at an accredited high school, college or university in the U.S.
• Enrolled at the undergraduate level
• Age sixteen (16) years or older
• Legal resident of the U.S. or hold a valid student visa
• Carry a status of “Good Standing”
• Maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0
• Submit their essay by 5:00 p.m. EST on December 15, 2008
• Essay should be 300 to 500 words in length

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars

The Washington Center is able to provide a total of 50 scholarship awards in the amount of $8,500 for each eligible undergraduate student with disabilities interested in working in the executive, judicial, or legislative branches of the government during fall 2006 and spring 2007. The scholarship goes toward covering TWC’s total program and housing fees. This money can be combined with state scholarship awards available through The Washington Center. Awards range from $1,800 to $4,000 per student. Eligible students would be able to combine these awards and have a remaining amount to cover additional living expenses.

Dates & Deadlines

• Early Deadline Range for Summer Term/Quarter and Postgraduate 2008 begins September 28, 2007.
• Competitive deadline for Spring Semester/Quarter and Postgraduate 2008 is October 1, 2007.
• Regular deadline for Spring Semester/Quarter and Postgraduate 2008 is November 14, 2007.
• Early deadline range for Fall Semester, Quarter and Postgraduate 2008 begins January 25, 2008.

Who Should Apply?
Applicants Must:

• Be enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university as an undergraduate
• Have at least a 2.75 GPA
• Receive academic credit
• Be a U.S. Citizen
• Self-identify as a person with a disability as defined by the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

To Apply:

• Provide a letter from your campus disability services office, a vocational rehabilitation office OR a physician treating you for your disability confirming the fact that you have a disability. (In addition to the general TWC application)

Nadia Powers Scholarship

• A $500 Scholarship awarded to a UCLA Undergraduate or Graduate student for an outstanding project that furthers the understanding and study of people with disabilities.
• Projects must be faculty sponsored and may include: a research proposal, a research paper, field study report, architectural or 3-dimensional model/design. Possible subjects may include any of a wide variety of issues related to people with disabilities such as behavior, care, interactions, access issues, political power, etc.
• The Nadia Powers Scholarship is available only to those undergraduate and graduate students who plan to attend UCLA in the coming academic year.
• Submissions:
  • may be done as a class project or as a 1999, but they must be supervised by a faculty member
  • do not have to be restricted to the UCLA disabled community. They can be about people with disabilities or disability related issues in general.
  • must be original research that is accomplished at UCLA.
  • from a previous year may be resubmitted.
  • may be submitted by a previous scholarship recipient.
  • may be joint project between a UCLA student and a Non-UCLA student.

Nancy Diane Orford Scholarship, a donor-funded scholarship for UCLA students.

Deadline

• Completed applications with supporting documentation must be received at the SRC by June 30th.

Eligibility

• Preference to an enrolled UCLA student diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis in good academic standing. Students with other disabilities will also be considered.

Award Amount

• The scholarship provides funding for registration fees and educational materials.

Application Procedures

• Complete the Nancy Diane Orford application.
• Include a personal essay, which should not exceed 500 words (two, double-spaced pages). In the essay, please discuss your particular challenge, how you overcame any obstacles, and how the scholarship will help you pursue your goals. The essay will be used as a sample of your writing.
• Attach a letter of recommendation: the recommender must seal and sign the envelope. Applicant’s name must appear on the front of the envelope with his/her UCLA ID number.
• Include an official or unofficial copy of all your college transcripts.

• Applicants will be notified by August 30th.

California Association on Postsecondary Education and Disability (CAPED) Student Scholarships

There are also several state-wide scholarships offered through the California Association on Postsecondary Education and Disability (CAPED). The CAPED scholarships are for $1,000-1,500 with various eligibility requirements, but all are awarded to students with disabilities. Check with OSD or CAPED for a complete list

CAPED invites you to complete a 2008 student scholarship application. Student Scholarship application Link. This year, CAPED will award scholarships to nine students. Application packets must be postmarked no later than September 19, 2008

• Susan Bunch Memorial Scholarship $1,000
  In memory of Susan Bunch, a Learning Disabilities Specialist from West Valley College.
  Awarded to a student with a learning disability who is pursuing a college degree.

• Cindy Kolb Memorial Scholarship $1,000
  In memory of Cindy Kolb, a Director of Disabled Student Services at San Francisco State University.
  Awarded to a student with a disability attending a four-year college or university.

• William May Memorial Scholarship $1,000
  In memory of William May, a CAPED Founder and a former Coordinator of Disabled Student Programs and Services at Riverside City College.
  Awarded to a college student with a disability.

• Lynn M. Smith Memorial Scholarship $1,000
  In memory of Lynn M. Smith, Career/Vocational counselor at DeAnza Community College and Director of Disabled Student Services at San Francisco State University.
  Awarded to a Community College student with a disability who is pursuing a vocational career goal.

• Walter Young Memorial Scholarship $1,000
  In memory of Walter Young, CAPED supporter and husband of Past President, Ellen Young.
  Awarded to a college student who is blind or visually impaired

• Steve Fasteau Past Presidents' Scholarship $1,000
  In honor of all the dedicated professionals who have served as President of CAPED.
  Awarded to a college student with a disability who has high academic achievement and has shown leadership and dedication to the advancement of students with disabilities in postsecondary (college or university) education.

• CAPED General Excellence Scholarship $1,500
  In celebration of student excellence.
  Awarded to a college student with a disability who demonstrates high academic achievement and is involved in his/her community as well as campus life.

• Patricia Sonntag Memorial Scholarship $1,000
  In memory of Patricia Sonntag, a Director of the Office of Services to Students with Disabilities from Sacramento State University.
  Awarded to a student with a disability attending a four-year college or university, who is majoring in a field related to policy formulation or service delivery to students with disabilities or is actively engaged in advocacy or leadership in campus, community or governmental organization that benefits individuals with disabilities regardless of major.

• Dick Griffiths Memorial Scholarship $1,000
  In memory of Richard (Dick) Griffiths, a Learning Disabilities Specialist and founder of CAPED from Cabrillo College.
  Awarded to a student with a learning disability who has been challenged in math. (In addition to completing the Student Scholarship Application, the student should include a brief essay on strategies that s/he uses to overcome his/her math challenges, which will be published in the CAPED Communiqué to benefit other students with similar challenges).

UCLA Scholarship Resource Center

The Scholarship Resource Center is another great source for scholarships. The search for scholarships can be complicated and confusing, but the Scholarship Resource Center (SRC) is here to help guide you through the maze. The SRC maintains a scholarship database and library, and provides workshops and counseling. The SRC is located at 233 Covel Commons (206-2875).

The SRC also offers the U.S. National and British Merit Scholarships and workshops to provide UCLA students information about national scholarships such as the Rhodes, Churchill, and Truman Scholarship programs.

A great way to become familiar with the process is to sign up for one of the Free Scholarship Search Workshops. Check the SRC website for times and locations.
