Spring 2010 Update

UCLA Office for Students with Disabilities

From the editor: A full version of our newsletter, New Horizons, will be published late April or early May. There is some important information that couldn’t wait, however, so we decided to publish a “mini-newsletter” we’re calling the New Horizons Bulletin. This abbreviated version will provide you with useful information to help you get the Spring, 2010 quarter started right. Please enjoy.

  • For Our Graduating Students: If you have questions about access at your Commencement and/or Graduation Ceremonies and how it might impact your participation, please let the OSD know as soon as possible. If you have questions about access for guests at Commencement, please go to the Commencement website: www.commencement.ucla.edu or contact the OSD beginning May 1, 2010.
  • Congratulations to Our Graduates: If you would like to be recognized by name in our full Spring, 2010 newsletter, please contact Deb Owen at dowen@saonet.ucla.edu and let her know by April 23, 2010.
  • Construction Update for 2010 Spring Quarter: The Northwest Housing In-Fill Project continues. The area of impact is primarily Sproul Hall, De Neve Plaza and De Neve Drive. There is no vehicle access to the Sproul/Sunset turnaround during this three year project. Additionally, De Neve Drive is one way (North and Northeast) from C.E. Young Drive (near De Neve Plaza and Sproul). The sidewalk along the south side of Sproul and Covel is closed as is the on-street parking in this section of C.E. Young Drive. More information on this and other projects at the Residence Halls can be found at www.housing.ucla.edu/construction. Check out the Capital Programs frequently-updated web site for other campus construction impacts: www.capital.ucla.edu click on "Construction Impacts" under Projects. Please call the OSD at (310) 825-1501 for detailed information.
  • Student Contributions: Do you have something you’d like included in the newsletter? Perhaps you have exciting plans for the summer, or an especially memorable experience here at UCLA or a poem you’ve written or anything that you’d like to share. Please submit it to Deb Owen by April 23, 2010 at dowen@saonet.ucla.edu. The OSD reserves the right to edit for length or content as they feel is necessary.
  • Student Support Groups: The AD/HD Group will be discontinued Spring quarter 2010 due to lack of attendance. If you are interested in getting the group running again, please schedule an appointment with Kearney Visser, Ph.D., or Jessie Downey, M.Ed. For those interested in attending a 5-session Social Skills Training Group, speak with your Learning Specialist to determine if it is a good match for your needs. The Bipolar Disorder Group will meet in Murphy Hall on Mondays from 1:00-2:00pm Spring quarter 2010, starting April 12, 2010 (WEEK 3).
  • Our annual Disclosure Workshop: Will be held on Thursday, April 15th from 2:30 to 4 in Murphy 2325. This is a great way to learn from professionals about the ins and out’s of disclosing, both on graduate and job applications. For more information, please call Julie at 310-794-5732. Hope to see you there!
  • The 2009-10 Student Evaluation of Services: Will be mailed out in early May. Your opinions matter to us. Many of the changes and upgrades we have made over the years were a result of responses and comments made on these surveys.

  • Are you receiving your OSD mail?
Changing your address with the Registrar’s office
DOES NOT change your address with OSD.

Please remember to let the OSD know each time you change your mailing address in order to continue to receive important mailing regarding priority enrollment, proctoring, van transportation etc.
You can e-mail us, or come in and fill out a “change of address” slip.
  • Proctor Information:

The First Two Weeks (a poem)

Accommodations for tests requested by you
Must be filled out at Powell
In week one and week two.
After that time, we cannot guarantee
    Your request can be honored
    Time’s up, don’t you see?

So fill out the forms and turn them in fast
    For the deadline approaches
    And soon will be past.
Mark the dates in your book for week one and week two
But, if you miss the deadline…
    What can you do?
