A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

Kathy's Korner

Welcome to all new and returning students. It is hard to believe that summer is over and we are starting academic year 2007-08. I hope you enjoyed your summer. I encourage you to take a few minutes to read this edition of New Horizons. This kick-off issue is meant to assist you in having a very successful quarter.

Please Make an Appointment
We urge you to make an appointment with an OSD staff member to arrange for the services that you will be using this quarter. Remember, “the early bird gets the worm.” Students tell me over and over again that this makes all the difference in having a successful quarter.

Your Feedback
Each Spring quarter, we send you a Student Evaluation of Services for the academic year. We really appreciate you taking the time to complete it and return it to us, as we are able to get an idea of how the year went for you and perhaps make some adjustments on how we do things. However, we have noticed that some of you wait until you are filling out the evaluation to tell us about a problem you have had. The unfortunate thing is that we are unable to help you if you wait until the end of the year. So, I would urge you to tell us as soon as possible if you are having a problem. This way, we can do our best to address it. We are here to assist you. Be sure to drop by to let us know how things are going.

There is a new minor at UCLA! It is the Disability Studies Minor.
After many years of unwavering efforts by staff in the College of Letters & Sciences, UCLA faculty and members of the UCLA Committee on Disability, I am excited to tell you that this new minor is a reality. So, I am encouraging all of you to obtain details of this new offering by clicking on this web address www.disabilitystudies.ucla.edu . There is also a wonderful event planned on October 10, 2007 from 11:30-1:30 at the Charles E. Young Grand Salon at Kerchoff Hall. It is called Dialogue on Disability Studies. It is part of Celebrating Undergraduate Education: Innovations 2007. Please join the Chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee for Disability Studies and Leaders from the Disabled Students Union at this first of a kind event. A buffet lunch will be provided with a brief panel presentation at 12 noon followed by a discussion. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP by calling (310) 794-5040.

I hope you enjoy reading this issue of New Horizons. Please let us know if you would like to contribute an article or if you would like us to cover a particular topic by contacting Deb Owen at dowen@saonet.ucla.edu. Come by the OSD to say hello and to let us know how things are going. We are here to assist you. Have a great quarter!

Aloha, Sharon. Welcome, Halle.

There is a change to the learning disabilities program during the ’07-’08 academic year. Dr. Sharon Teruya, who has been a Learning Disabilities Specialist at OSD for nearly 8 years, will be spending the year at the University of Hawaii, developing a learning disabilities program there. Congratulations, Sharon! You will be missed. Joining us is our former testing intern, Dr. Halle Aten, who has a wealth of experience and is enthusiastic about her new po-sition. We are thrilled to welcome her to our staff. Please stop by and say hello!

New Horizons is available in Braille, on tape cassette and on the OSD web site. Contact the OSD to request a copy in an alternative format.

Returning Students…
HAVE YOU MOVED?

Please remember to let the OSD know each time you change your address in order to continue to receive important mailings regarding priority enrollment, proctoring, van transportation, etc.

Changing your address with the Registrar’s Office DOES NOT change your address with OSD.

You can call the office, e-mail us, or come in and fill out a change of address slip.

SCHEDULE TO REQUEST PROCTOR TEST-TAKING ACCOMMODATIONS, OSD RESOURCE ROOM

We are now accepting requests for test-taking accommodations (no appointment necessary) between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. until October 12, 2007, the end of week 2. In addition, we need 10 working days notice before an exam to make the necessary arrangements. Come before the October 12 deadline even if you do not have all of the information. If you miss the October 12 deadline, you will need to make an appointment by calling (310) 825-2651 regarding your exam accommodations.

The OSD Resource Room is located in 181 Powell on the 1st floor. To enter, you may go up the steps across from Kinsey or enter on the ground floor and use the elevator. There are two ground floor entrances: there is one accessible by ramp on the east side of the Library that has an automatic door and is nearest the elevator going up to the 1st floor. The other entrance is behind Powell and across from Moore. CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Construction of the Westwood Replacement Hospital continues with a completion date very soon. Unlike past years, the sidewalk on both sides of Westwood Plaza is open; therefore, there is minimal impact to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

The Residence Hall rooms of Sproul hall are closed for upgrades and repairs. This project is scheduled to be completed by Summer 08. The first floor of Sproul – the Housing Offices – are open and ready to work with students.

A new major construction site is that of the Life Sciences Replacement Building near Manning and C.E.Young Drive – what once was Hershey Hall. The sidewalk on the east side of C.E.Y. Drive from Manning Drive to the Botany Building is closed.

Seismic upgrades continue at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. There is minimal impact to pedestrians or vehicles.

The Replacement Engineering Building is just about finished. The outdoor stairs between Ackerman and the Engineering Buildings are open and more importantly the west facing doors on the fourth floor of Math Sciences (just near the DCP) are re-opened. The timeline for specific phases for the remainder of this project is not yet complete.

Check out the Capital Programs frequently-updated web site for construction impacts: www.capital.ucla.edu click on “Construction Impacts” under Projects

If you have specific questions about specific construction projects or access to any building or area on campus, please call the OSD at (310) 825-1501 for detailed information.

ADDITIONAL ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION:
All UCLA libraries meet ADA requirements for physical access. YRL has ramps and elevators; and College Library has ramps leading into Powell, as well as a handicapped lift. UCLA libraries have special equipment and trained staff to assist people with disabilities with evacuation in case of an emergency.

One specialized public workstation in each of the Biomedical, College, and Research libraries is equipped with an integrated voice synthesizer to output the content of the computer screen to headphones, and allows screen magnification to a variety of sizes. These and some other standard workstations are installed on adjustable tables to accommodate wheelchairs.

If your disability is not physically visible, please identify yourself as having a disability, and the library staff at UCLA will make every effort to assist you in obtaining information from equipment or resources that are inaccessible to you. You may ask for assistance in retrieving books from the stacks or photocopying material. If, due to heavy workload, immediate assistance cannot be provided, staff may make arrangements to have the material ready the next working day.

Searching For Scholarships?

Cartoonish picture money

Check out our website scholarship/internship section at: www.osd.ucla.edu/Scholarships.htm

The Scholarship Resource Center is another great source for scholarships. The search for scholarships can be complicated and confusing, but the Scholarship Resource Center (SRC) is here to help guide you through the maze. The SRC maintains a scholarship database and library, and provides workshops and counseling. The SRC is located at 233 Covel Commons (206-2875).

The SRC also offers the U.S. National and British Merit Scholarships and workshops to provide UCLA students information about national scholarships such as the Rhodes, Churchill, and Truman Scholarship programs.

A great way to become familiar with the process is to sign up for one of the Free Scholarship Search Workshops. Check the SRC website for times and locations.
